BALOS LAGOON
Balos Lagoon is situated between the island of Gramvousa and the coast of western Crete. “Cape Tigani”, means the frying pan in Greek and has got its nick name after the islet through the lagoon. It is located in the end of the Gramvousa peninsula and can be reached by jeep or by boat. Most of the visitors choose a boat trip, because the road is unpaved , there’s not much place for parking and you have to walk the last 2 km until you reach the beach. A boat trip is simply more relaxing and this way you have the possibility to visit Gramvousa island and also enjoy the amazing view of the Balos lagoon. Balos has become one of Cretes most attractive beach to visit. It was also here Prinsess Diana and prince Charles set its Yatch at their honeymoon.

There are two Gramvousa islands and at one of them you will find the venetian fort called Imer Gramvousa. Its a popular tourist attraction and if you join the boat cruise, it will stops there for a visit. Read more about the cruise at the Boat Cruise activity bellow.

The road to northern part av the peninsula is in a bad shape and we always recommend the boat cruise. However, if you want to drive out there (please make sure your car insurance cover damages), its a fee of 2€. You will not find many parking places so get ready to park the car along the road and that can be a bit far away from the startingpoint. When you will come to the starting point, you have approx 30 minuite hike down towards the lagoon. It's a beautiful view from the starting point. Make sure you will have the strength to walk back up, espesially difficult in summer heat.
